The Panormo village is located in the center of the north road axle, 22 kilometers east from Rethymno and 55 km west from Heraklion. The visitor can visit the archaeological museum of Eleftherna with the ancient antiquities and the village “Margarites” which is famous for its ceramics.
The alongside mooring in the harbour provides good shelter for all but strong north, east and northeast winds. The harbour is open to the east. There is a light on the harbour entrance. Panormos beach is in fact two separate sandy beaches.
The main beach is sheltered from the wind by the small harbour. The second beach is equally good and is a short walk to the west of Panormos. Both are normally uncrowded and have shallow water good for swimming. Watersports like windsurfing and diving are available.
Moreover, at Panormo Village, one of the major attractions is the early Christian royal Saint Sofia (Agia Sofia) of 5th century and at the cape (Akrotiri) Chondrokavos 800 meters from the village, there is a lighthouse from where the visitor can admire the sea and the land, as well as the sunset which from this point is a unique experience. If someone wants to swim or experience himself with sea sports, there are beaches with that possibility. The visitor can enjoy his food at the restaurants and taverns of the area. The cultural company of Panormo ” Epimenidis ” provides to residents and visitors cultural events in the ‘Charoupomylos’ which has been converted in a cultural center. The access from Rethymno is very easy with regular bus routes, taxi and rented cars or motorcycles.
